RRV Acting Regional Director (Eastern) Pas Monacella said the number of logging trucks will likely increase over the coming months, especially along Bonang and McKillops roads between Tubbut and Orbost.

“Timber production is a significant industry in Gippsland and we’re asking drivers to be mindful of this important period for industry as well as their own safety,” Mr Monacella said.

“To further support truck movements along the Bonang, we’ve doubled the frequency of routine inspections and we’re doing more maintenance in response to the additional traffic to ensure the road remains fit for purpose.

“We’re asking drivers not to be complacent – ensure it’s safe to overtake large vehicles, remain patient and make sure you’re aware of the blind spots associated with larger vehicles like logging trucks.”

Mr Monacella also asked those driving heavy vehicles to ensure they were adequately rested before getting behind the wheel.

“Fatigue is one of the biggest causes of trauma on Victoria’s roads,” Mr Monacella said.

“We’re asking that before anyone gets behind the wheel of a vehicle, they take a moment to assess if they feel suitably alert to drive.”
