We’re replacing the roundabout with traffic lights at the Hertford Street (Glenelg Highway) and Albert Street (Midland Highway) intersection.

The upgrade will include:

replacing the roundabout with traffic lights and installing dedicated turn lanes
adding bicycle boxes at traffic lights
extending the central medians
installing new lighting and landscaping

Background

This intersection connects two highways that meet in the heart of Sebastopol’s commercial centre.

At its busiest times, approximately 2900 vehicles use this intersection each day. This is expected to increase by 50 per cent by 2041. There were 16 crashes in this area between 2014 and 2019.

There is considerable pedestrian activity in this area due to the intersection’s proximity to shops, food outlets, schools and aged care facilities.

Update – February 2020

We’ll begin service location and investigative digging in the week of 17 February. These works are expected to take up to two weeks to complete. Traffic management, including speed reductions and lane closures, will be in place. Electronic message boards will advise of the works one week prior.

Service relocation works are expected to begin by mid-2020 before major construction in late 2020.
